(How to make a PCB in simple steps)

4 channel Knight rider circuit with high power outputs (12V 10A)

I never thought to make old, well known knight rider circuit with 555 and 4017 ICs in this age, but some students from Medical Faculty of University of Sri Jayawardhanapura asked to make it again....
They need simple LED running circuit to animate their something for the exhibition, and I proposed simple kinght rider LED runner to achieve the task. But, their design has fairly large number of LEDs and hence the output current capacity per channel must be large.

In the design time, I have no idea about the number of LEDs to be connected per channnel. So, I decided to make the circuit with high power outputs, make it enable for at least 10A load from each channel.

As traditional practice, I thought to setup with some BJT for output stage, but then I need to setup output current buffer amplifiers for 4017. Next option is to setup with power darlington transistors. But, one such high power darlington transistor is costs more than 100 rupees......

It is very simple idea to use MOSFETs for the output stage to do this. Here, I selected cheap IRFZ44N, which can handle fairly large load current with extremely low ON resistance. One FET costs less than Rs. 50 and have extreme boost on output current. Because MOSFETs are voltage operated devices.  Any MOSFET with low ON resistance, will work for this design.

I checked this circuit with 12V 8A load per channel without having heat sinks for MOSFETs..But, it is not recommended to use this circuit with low supply voltages below 9V, because, it might be having problems to keep required gate voltage across the MOSFET to keep it fully ON.

I used vero board to make the circuit, but special care must be pay for the ground connection of the MOSFETs. They operate with high currents and have a chance to burn vero board traces or, they might get heat up. Apply a layer of lead alone the trace to make it thicker, will solve the problem.

Since, SMPS modules are so popular, I advised them to use 12V 10A Switch Mode Power Supply with this, to power up the LED system.

Here is the circuit diagram of the knight rider circuit. It can be extend up to 10 channels, by following the same design, without any problem.

Mini Project for Control System Design

This is mini project, suitable for biginners to study the basis of digital PID control. This design includes,

>Reference speed (desired speed) is input to the system as a variable control. In this design, it is possible to change the set point from 2500 rpm to 4530 rpm.
> A dc motor maintains the desired speed and the running speed is display in a four digits seven segment cell.
>System can display internal operating parameters through seven segment cell by pressing external button, makes it easier to understand the behavior, both design wise and operational and debugging wise.
>There is an incremental encoder to measure the actual speed of the motor & it will be feedback to the control system to maintain the reference speed.
>There is a current sensor feedback from motor driver to improve the safety of the system.
>System has facility to change the internal parameters in PID controller in the control unit. This can be achieved using external press button switches.
>Rotational direction change via external key press.
>Factory reset function. It is useful to reset all control parameters to default values.
>Soft start function reduces over shoot when the system starts from the rest state.
>Error indication via LED and seven segment display.
>In Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) is possible via the ICSP header located in the circuit.

Interfacing with DS 18 B 20 Digital Thermometer

DS18B20PAR is 3 pin digital thermometer with all necessary features to measure temperature upto 12 bit resolution. This use one wire protocol, so it is easy to wire. But, bit difficult to interface. This IC operates with Parasite-Power(bus powered) and so we need only two wires. For more information and free samples, refer

http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm?qv_pk=2813

This is the mcu code to read and write data from this chip.

Hardware over view.....

** Use PIC18F452 with 12MHz oscillator.
** Refer the top image for hardware connections
** Use Mikro Electronika C compiler

SONY TY voltage regulation problem

I have SONY KV-G 21 type 21 inch color TV, which was bought by my father 10 years ago. It works well for us more than, with small repairs. But from month ago, it had ugly fault. Sometimes, the image reduces from horizontal and stretch vertical and sound get stuck.

Unfortunately, when I remove the cover and try to test it...... Oh fault is not there and TV works fine !!!! What a headache. But, after two or three days, same story comes again..... OOOOHHHH..

In last Sunday, again I remove the back cover, and test the TV. I detect some sudden voltage drop form both 15V and 115V power supply outputs. According to the power supply design, 115V line is fully regulated, but it was 108V at that time !!!

Ohhhh.... This may happen with over loading, but my multi meter reading shows it's not. Then fault should be either primary side of the SMPS or in the secondary side.. The TV designers use STR-S 6707 as off line SMPS.

I just check the voltage across the opto isolater PC123 from secondary side, it varies.... It must be, but cannot present voltage if the supply is less than 115 V. !!! Nothing to say, the fault is in the SE115 - error amp IC. I just replace it and all come normal :-)
